WebSpeedReader Installation, Uninstallation, and Upgrade Notes

Important Bug Notice: Various versions of Windows, including the latest version, Windows XP, can cause the setup program of WebSpeedReader to fail. Frequently, it will present a message box stating that it couldn’t find a file, and that you need to insert a disk. If this happens to you, then you need to update windows first. There is usually a menu item on the Start menu called Windows Update, or you can go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ with your current browser. Selecting this will cause Windows to load the default browser, navigate to Microsoft’s windows update site, with further instructions on what to do. When the download is complete, you will be asked to restart the computer so that the updates can take effect. You may need to update Windows, even if you have just bought your computer! When the computer is restarted with the new update, then run the WebSpeedReader Setup.exe again. It should install with no problem. If you do have a problem, please email me; put WebSpeedReader in the subject line. I would greatly appreciate it if you would let me know about this.

WebSpeedReader is actually a small program, less than 200K, but because it needs what are called run-time files, these files greatly increase the size of the downloaded program. (This is true of most software written today.) However, if you are upgrading from an older version of WebSpeedReader, you can download just WebSpeedReader and its supporting html files, only 120K zipped. You can also use this installation program if you have Microsoft Office 2000 or XP. Although WebSpeedReader doesn't use or need Office, Office installs the same support files needed by WebSpeedReader, thus eliminating the need to download these files again. If you download the smaller installation program, then you do not need to close any programs except for WebSpeedReader itself, and you will not have to reboot (you don't have to reboot for the full installation program either). You will not even have to close your Internet connection if you use dial-up.

To uninstall WebSpeedReader, just select Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs, scroll down until you see the entry for WebSpeedReader, then select it to uninstall. If for any reason, you don't see an entry for WebSpeedReader, then just select the Run option from the Start menu, then type in the full program name, or use the Browse button on the Run dialog box,  and add the switch /Uninstall. Thus, on most systems, you would type C:\Program Files\WebSpeedReader\WebSpeedReader.exe /Uninstall. This will remove the shortcuts and the registry entries created by WebSpeedReader. Then, just use Windows Explorer to delete the WebSpeedReader directory.

The WebSpeedReader files are zipped, which is a special compression format. Windows ME and Windows XP have native support for zip files. Just click on the zipped files in Windows Explorer to unpack and install. If you use another Windows operating system and don't have a zip program, you can choose and download any one of these FREE zip programs: http://www.webattack.com/freeware/downloader/fwzip.shtml
